Lawyers for people hurt in Indiana stage collapse reach settlement with Sugarland, Live Nation

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Country duo Sugarland, concert promoter Live Nation and 16 other defendants have agreed to pay $39 million to settle claims stemming from the deadly 2011 Indiana State Fair stage collapse, lawyers for the victims and their families announced Friday. Friday's settlement resulted from mediation that began in the spring and is in addition to an earlier $11 million settlement with the state. Some plaintiffs did not accept Indiana's settlement, but attorney Kenneth J. Allen said the latest settlement with the other defendants involves all victims. He said one defendant, ESG Security, is not part of the settlement and that case could go to trial next year if no settlement is reached.

At public hearing, NYC jail boss says restrictive Rikers Island unit needed to stop violence

NEW YORK (AP) — Correction officials on Friday encouraged the city's jail watchdog board to approve a proposed rule change to allow for the creation of a 250-bed restrictive housing unit at Rikers Island for the 2.2 percent of inmates they say are responsible for the vast majority of violence. "We don't get all of this violence by accident," Ponte said, referring to current housing setups and a backlog of inmates who owe time in solitary confinement but are in general population because there aren't enough beds.

Decision to pull 'The Interview' likely influenced by Colorado shooting, ensuing lawsuits

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When a group claiming credit for the hacking of Sony Pictures Entertainment threated violence against theaters showing "The Interview" earlier this week, the fate of the movie's big-screen life was all but sealed. The theater's owner contends it could have foreseen the bloodshed, but it still faces 20 lawsuits over the mass shootings and survivors and victims' families asserting more should have been done to protect those who went to see a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
