US auto sales expected to drop in August, but Ford and Fiat Chrysler buck trend, GM flat

DETROIT (AP) — As China's auto market recoils, the U.S. remains a bright spot as it rolls on toward its best performance in more than a decade. Sales figures for August released Tuesday by Sweden's Volvo Cars tell the story: Volvo's U.S. vehicle sales jumped 18.3 percent as the new XC90 SUV went on sale, and they rose 6.5 percent in Europe. But its sales in China plunged 10 percent. One of every five vehicles Volvo sells globally is sold in China.

Citing consumer risk, FDA sends warning letters to 5 distributors of pure powdered caffeine

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration has issued warning letters to five distributors of pure powdered caffeine, saying the products put consumers at risk. The letters, which are dated Aug. 27, follow the overdose deaths last year of two young men from Ohio and Georgia. Caffeine powder is usually marketed as a dietary supplement and is unregulated, unlike caffeine added to soda. Since the FDA doesn't have the legal authority to pull such a substance off the shelves, the agency has been building a case against those who are marketing it in bulk in an attempt to persuade them to stop.

Athletic facility under construction at private Rhode Island university collapses, injuring 6

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — An athletic building under construction at a private university collapsed Tuesday, injuring six construction workers and leaving crumpled steel strewn across the site. The six men are in good condition at Rhode Island Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Beth Bailey said. Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said the men were in various locations — on top of the structure, inside or working in cranes to move steel around — when the steel collapsed.

Wolf tries new tactic in stalemate to secure a budget agreement: Smaller, quieter meetings

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Wolf is shifting strategy as a state government budget stalemate stretches into a third month, abandoning heavily attended meetings with lawmakers and aides in the Capitol in favor of smaller, more private meetings without staff. "The path that negotiations have been on have not been productive," Wolf's spokesman Jeff Sheridan said Tuesday. "I think there's been a lot of people in the room, a lot going on outside the room."
