Protesters arrested at coal firm Alpha's HQ in Va

Several environmental activists were arrested Friday after blocking the road leading to the headquarters for Alpha Natural Resources Inc. to protest the coal producer's mining practices. The activists hauled in a 250-gallon tanker with non-toxic black water to symbolize the dammed-up wastewater from coal operations that they believe threatens coalfields residents.

NJ homeowners hit by Sandy can apply for grants

New Jersey is now accepting applications from homeowners seeking grants to rebuild homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The grants are part of $1.8 billion in the first round of federal aid sent to New Jersey to deal with costs not covered by insurance or other programs. Homeowners can get up to $150,000 to cover the costs of elevating or rebuilding primary homes. They can also get up to $10,000 to stay in communities affected by the storm last year.

Mass. Senate approves $34 billion spending plan

The Massachusetts Senate has given final approval to its version of the state budget, setting the stage for negotiations with the House over the $34 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1. Malloy, Larson announce manufacturing initiative

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Congressman John Larson are announcing a new manufacturing jobs initiative that will bring together state government, businesses and colleges. The announcement is set for Friday morning at Goodwin College in East Hartford. Earlier this month, the college launched a new certification program for production technicians featuring a hybrid curriculum of classroom learning and interactive virtual simulation.
