Judge lets case questioning media mogul Redstone's mental state proceed, but not with urgency

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has decided that a case challenging media mogul Sumner Redstone's capacity to make health care decisions for himself can proceed. The case was filed in Los Angeles by a longtime friend of the 92-year-old Redstone, who controls CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc. The friend, Manuela Herzer, claims that Redstone was not mentally competent to remove her as the person who makes his medical decisions. That happened in October.

Testing of Alaska seafood finds no contamination from 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska seafood has not been tainted by the Fukushima nuclear disaster four years ago, according to test results announced Monday by a state agency. A 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011, generated a 130-foot wave that devastated 217 square miles in Japan. About 16,000 people were confirmed dead and nearly 2,600 were never found.

Connecticut hospitals move toward possible lawsuit against state over tax

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Hospitals took the first steps toward a possible legal battle with the state over a tax the medical centers claim is unconstitutional and is harming hospitals financially. If the agencies determine the tax and its methodology are fine, that could become the basis for the association to challenge the tax in court. The group's counterparts in New Hampshire took a similar path before negotiating a financial settlement with lawmakers and the governor.

Most, but not all, students return to Washington state university after online racial threats

SEATTLE (AP) — Most, but not all, students returned to a Washington state university Monday as police investigate racial threats against black students and others on social media that shut down the campus last week. "Frankly, I'm exhausted. This isn't an 'if' but 'when they come after you' situation. I'm upset that Western let it get to this point," said Lulu Sapigao, adding that students have been saying for a long time that they don't feel safe on campus. "I'm upset that we're told to use the buddy system, and that's the only way that we can maybe have safety."
