LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Mexican fieldworkers lured through a guest worker program to do sweaty, back-aching work in Kentucky tobacco fields were paid far less than their guaranteed wages and lived in rat-infested housing, according to federal lawsuits against a half-dozen farmers. The guest worker program has been a staple in Kentucky agriculture. It brings in temporary fieldhands from other countries to handle jobs that go unfilled among local workers. Those chores include harvesting tobacco and stripping leaves from harvested stalks to prepare the crop for market.

Nevada casinos win $897.9 million in April, up 5.4 percent thanks in large part to slots

Nevada's Gaming Control Board reported the latest numbers Friday that showed the state's casinos won $897.9 million overall from slots, table games and baccarat.

American Express says President Ed Gilligan dies on corporate flight to New York

NEW YORK (AP) — American Express says president Ed Gilligan died suddenly Friday after falling ill while flying on a corporate plane to New York. The company says the 55-year-old executive was coming back from a business trip. It said the plane made an emergency landing. Gilligan began working at American Express Co. 35 years ago as an intern and became president of the credit card company in 2013.

Prosecutor: Nevada man who killed unarmed trespasser was seeking out a deadly confrontation

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada prosecutor is urging jurors to convict a 74-year-old man of first-degree murder, saying he was seeking out a deadly confrontation when he shot two unarmed trespassers in a vacant duplex he owns. A jury in Reno is expected to begin deliberations Friday afternoon after defense lawyer Theresa Ristenpart gives her closing statement.
