MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An attorney for a Minnesota man whose Toyota Camry rammed into another car in 2006, killing three people, said during closing arguments in federal court Wednesday that the car had a defect that caused the accelerator to stick. "You can't explain this accident any other way than having no brake applied and the foot at or near wide open throttle," Toyota attorney David Graves said, adding that if Lee had stepped on the brake hard, as he claimed to do, "this accident would not have happened."

NEW YORK (AP) — McDonald's CEO Don Thompson is stepping down as the world's biggest hamburger chain fights to hold onto customers and transform its image. McDonald's Corp., which has more than 35,000 locations around the world, has been struggling amid intensifying competition and changing attitudes about food. Earlier this month, the company reported falling earnings and sales and said it making major changes this year bring back customers and save money. It said it would slow down new restaurant openings in some markets. It's also making menu changes.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Charles Hard Townes, the co-inventor of the laser and a Nobel laureate in physics, has died at age 99. Townes did most of the work that would make him one of three scientists to share the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics for research leading to the creation of the laser while he was a faculty member at Columbia University.

Capstead Mortgage posts 4Q profit of $33.5 million, result misses forecasts

DALLAS (AP) _ Capstead Mortgage Corp. (CMO) on Wednesday reported fourth-quarter profit of $33.5 million. The Dallas-based company said it had profit of 31 cents per share. The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 33 cents per share.
