TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state judge says a small city can continue to ban licensed marijuana businesses, even if they're allowed under state law. A man who wanted to open a pot shop in the city of Fife sued over its ban on such businesses, saying voters intended to allow adequate access to marijuana to displace the black market.

Standard & Poor's 500 caps a strong August with another record high

The Standard & Poor's 500 index delivered its fourth record high in five days Friday, ending with the biggest monthly gain since February. The milestone-crushing run capped a week when the S&P eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for the first time. And the index ended August with a gain of 3.7 percent. Six months of solid job gains, strong company earnings and a bevy of corporate deal news contributed to the rally, part of a bull market that's been rumbling on for more than five years.

IMF board expresses confidence in Managing Director Lagarde despite French investigation

WASHINGTON (AP) — The executive board of the International Monetary Fund is expressing confidence in IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde after receiving a briefing on a French corruption probe in which Lagarde is being investigated. Lagarde called the investigation "without basis" after answering questions before magistrates in Paris on Wednesday. She and her former chief of staff are facing questions about their role in an arbitration ruling that handed 400 million euros ($531 million) to French businessman Bernard Tapie.
