FCC: Companies that provided subsidized phone service to poor leaked private data to Internet

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators say that two phone carriers — TerraCom and YourTel America — unwittingly posted the Social Security numbers, driver's licenses and other sensitive data of up to 300,000 people to the Internet. The Federal Communications Commission says the jointly owned companies complied but were so careless with the information that a reporter stumbled upon it during a simple Google search.

US official: Auto safety agency under review after air bag, ignition switch recalls criticized

WASHINGTON (AP) — Transportation officials are reviewing the "safety culture" of the federal agency that oversees auto recalls, a senior Obama administration official said Friday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been criticized by lawmakers and safety advocates for not acting aggressively enough regarding millions of vehicles with defective air bags or faulty ignition switches.

Massive air bag recalls bring many questions, some that can't be answered yet

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. investigators, automakers and a parts supply company are trying to figure out why some automobile air bags inflate with too much force, blowing apart metal canisters and sending shards flying at drivers and passengers. Many of the U.S. recalls have been limited to high-humidity areas in the South, but the boundaries of recall zones vary by manufacturer. All of this has confused car owners and even government safety regulators who published incorrect and incomplete lists of recalled models.

Groups raise safety concerns with Entergy nuke plants in Vermont, Massachusetts, New York

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Nuclear watchdog groups said Friday that Entergy Corp. is trying to cut costs at reactors it owns in Vermont, Massachusetts and New York, and may be placing safety in jeopardy as a result. "Running an aging nuclear reactor is already risky business," said Jessica Azulay, program director of the Syracuse, New York-based Alliance for a Green Economy. "But running an aging nuclear reactor on the cheap — that's just beyond irresponsible."
