NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. bank earnings rose 7.3 percent in the July-September quarter from a year earlier, as banks reduced their expenses and continued to lend out more money, which help drive up revenue. Banks and other financial institutions insured by the FDIC earned $38.7 billion in the third quarter, up from $36.1 billion a year ago. The percentage of unprofitable banks fell to 6.4 percent of institutions, versus 8.7 percent a year ago.

Oklahoma's average gas price has fallen for 27 straight days; now at about $2.61 per gallon

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gasoline prices are down in Oklahoma — and they keep falling. Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma, says the last time the Oklahoma average was this low was on Oct. 2, 2010. On Thanksgiving Day 2009, Oklahoma's average was $2.49, and Mai says motorists are on track to see the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since then, not only in Oklahoma but across the U.S.

Montana Supreme Court takes up coal tax dispute as state seeks $3.4 million from Cloud Peak

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Montana tax authorities were expected to argue Tuesday before the state Supreme Court that a Wyoming mining company owes $3.4 million for selling coal to affiliated companies at less-than-market prices. Selling coal through affiliates is a common industry practice that's come under scrutiny as state and federal regulators investigate whether companies are underpaying royalties on coal sold in the U.S. and abroad.

Ill-timed Red Sox tweet is 2nd gaffe in as many weeks by a Boston pro sports team

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox fans cried foul over an innocuous tweet the team acknowledges was ill-timed — the second social media gaffe by a Boston pro sports team in as many weeks. Hundreds of people pounced, accusing the Sox of being out of touch with a seminal national event. "Seriously?" responded Georgy Cohen, a digital communications consultant from Somerville, Massachusetts.
