OPEC upheaval delivers a broadside to major energy companies as oil prices plunge sharply

NEW YORK (AP) — A decision by OPEC this week to maintain current levels of oil production is hammering major energy companies in the U.S. and abroad. A barrel of benchmark U.S. crude, which cost well above $100 as recently as June, had fallen to about $73 as of this week. OPEC announced Thursday that it would not cut production in hopes of hurting producers in the U.S. and elsewhere that have been flooding the market with crude and natural gas.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stores are welcoming a second wave of shoppers in what has become a two-day kickoff to the holiday shopping season. The big question: How much Thanksgiving shopping will hurt Black Friday, which is relinquishing its status as the frenzied start of the holiday shopping season? Based on early reads, the crowds were thin early Friday morning in parts of the country, but traffic is expected to pick up throughout the day. Analysts and store executives were heartened to see that shoppers seem to be buying more than just the doorbusters.

LONDON (AP) — Migrants from Europe will have to leave Britain if they don't get a job within six months, and must work for four years before receiving some benefits, Prime Minister David Cameron announced Friday, in a carefully balanced speech designed to defuse domestic criticism of his immigration policies while averting a showdown with the European Union.
