Space wranglers: Internet billionaires take different approaches to exploring new horizons

VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — An isolated edge of vast West Texas is home to a highly secretive part of the 21st-century space race, one of two being directed in the Lone Star State by Internet billionaires whose personalities and corporate strategies seem worlds apart. Few visitors are allowed beyond the "No Trespassing" sign and a remote-controlled gate and into the desert and mountain environment reminiscent of the Air Force's renowned Area 51 in Nevada. The privileged who do get inside decline to describe what they've seen, typically citing confidentiality agreements.

Space wranglers: Internet billionaires take different approaches to exploring new horizons

VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — A remote operation that resembles the Air Force's famously secret Area 51 is one of two Texas sites playing host to a 21st-century space race. Low-key Amazon founder Jeff Bezos over the past decade has bought huge tracts of West Texas mountains and desert for his Blue Origin firm's launch site. Officials, who rarely discuss their plans, have said suborbital test flights may begin late this year.

Deutsche Bank Q1 earnings fall to $610 million as rate-rigging penalties hit bottom line

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Deutsche Bank says net profit fell to 559 million euros ($610 million) in the first quarter as legal penalties ate into stronger revenues from trading stocks and bonds. Profits were down from 1.103 billion euros in the year-ago quarter. The bank had to deduct an additional 1.5 billion euros from earnings to account for penalties it has agreed to pay to authorities in the U.S. and Britain to settle investigations into the bank's role in rigging key interest rate benchmarks and other matters.

Remington Arms calls back most of laid-off employees at upstate New York plant

ILION, N.Y. (AP) — Remington Arms has recalled most workers laid off last August and November at its upstate New York plant. Last year, the company laid off 231 employees in Ilion — 105 in August and 126 in November. Officials said the layoffs were because of a soft gun market. Remington Arms also built a new facility in Alabama in 2014, and the company plans to employ up to 2,000 people there.
