Casella reports 1st-quarter loss, misses expectations

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) _ Casella Waste Systems Inc. (CWST) on Wednesday reported a loss of $9.3 million in its first quarter. The Rutland, Vermont-based company said it had a loss of 23 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 34 cents per share. The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 21 cents per share.

Daimler unveils autonomous truck, predicts it will hit the road before a self-driving car

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Although much attention has been paid to autonomous vehicles being developed by Google and traditional car companies, one truck maker believes that automated tractor-trailers will be rolling along highways before self-driving cars are cruising around the suburbs. Daimler Trucks North America showed off a self-driving big rig on the road atop Hoover Dam Tuesday night, although in this case it had a driver with his hands on the wheel the whole time.

Manhole explosion near New York's Penn Station snarls traffic, affects phones; hotel evacuated

NEW YORK (AP) — A manhole explosion near New York City's Penn Station has led to the evacuations of a hotel and the studios of Al Jazeera America. It also has snarled traffic and affected area phone, Internet and cable service. The explosion produced flames that quickly dissipated. But smoke and an acrid odor hung over the busy commercial area.

Veeco Instruments reports first-quarter loss but tops expectations

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (AP) _ Veeco Instruments Inc. (VECO) on Wednesday reported a first-quarter loss of $19.1 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 9 cents per share.
