US Treasury estimates federal borrowing will total $552 billion this year, lowest in 8 years

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department on Monday estimated that it will end up borrowing $552 billion for the current budget year, the lowest total in eight years. Borrowing began to surge after 2007 to meet a string of record deficits. Between 2009 and 2012, the deficit — the gap between revenues and spending — topped $1 trillion as the government struggled to cope with a financial crisis and the worst recession since the 1930s.

Pennsylvania woman pleads guilty to taking English, college tests for another Chinese woman

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Chinese citizen who lives in Pennsylvania has pleaded guilty to charges she took an English-language test and a college entrance exam for another Chinese woman now enrolled at Virginia Tech. Federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh allege the defendants scammed costly tests run by Educational Testing Service and the College Board.

CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were lower Monday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Beef was higher and pork was lower on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. October live cattle was up 2.18 cents to $1.4810 a pound; August feeder cattle rose 3.13 cents to $2.1385 a pound; while October lean hogs were off .03 cent at $.6567 a pound.
