SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — An American Airlines captain became gravely ill and incapacitated while flying from Phoenix to Boston and later died, but his first officer safely diverted and landed the nearly 150-passenger plane, an airline spokeswoman said. American Flight 550 left Phoenix at 11:55 p.m. local time Sunday and was diverted mid-flight, landing shortly after 7 a.m. EDT, American spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said. After the flight's captain was stricken, the first officer safely took over with 147 passengers and five crew members onboard.

Major US textbook publisher apologizes for high school textbook that called slaves 'workers'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — One of the biggest publishers in the U.S. apologized Monday for calling slaves brought to America "workers" in a geography textbook used widely in Texas, where the wording went unnoticed during the state's combative and politically charged classroom curriculum reviews. Roughly a quarter of Texas' 1,200 school districts use the textbook, according to state officials. The publisher didn't respond to questions about how many other classrooms in the U.S. purchased copies with the same phrasing.

(AP) — An American Airlines co-pilot made a mid-flight diversion and safely landed a plane carrying 152 people after the captain became ill and died, an airline spokeswoman said Monday. Details of the medical emergency and the identity of the dead pilot weren't immediately released, and the airline wouldn't say when the death occurred.
