Holiday shoppers get a head start on Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (AP) — Black Friday used to kick off the holiday shopping season, but now that day has taken a backseat to Thanksgiving Day. Still, retailers have settled into times that don't interfere with the turkey feast. One big exception: J.C. Penney, which is opening two hours earlier at 3 p.m. on the holiday. Staples has reversed course and will close on the holiday. And sporting goods chain REI, which was always closed on Thanksgiving, is bowing out of Black Friday too.

In Austria, Cameron says Britons 'not happy' with EU status quo

VIENNA (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that his fellow citizens are "not happy" with the EU status quo, the relationship between countries using the euro and those — like his— with national currencies. Britain plans to hold a referendum within two years on continued EU membership and is pushing for reforms within the bloc that reduce the authority of institutions at EU headquarters in Brussels.

Later, as a darling of the financial markets, he jokingly said that the acronym actually meant "better than Goldman" Sachs.

Brazil bank's shares tumble after arrest of billionaire leader in corruption case

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The arrest of one of Brazil's richest men has sent shares in his bank tumbling. Andre Esteves was completing his first day in jail on Thursday after being accused of obstructing a probe into corruption at the state oil company, Petrobras. Esteves denies all the accusations. Shares in his BTG Pactual bank dipped 21 percent Wednesday on the Sao Paulo stock market. And on Thursday, rating agency Moody's said it was placing the bank's ratings on review for downgrade, which triggered another session of losses for BTG.
