Business expert with little education experience selected as next University of Iowa president

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa's governing board on Thursday named a corporate management expert with little higher education experience as the school's next president, an unusual choice meant to shake up the culture of the state's flagship academic institution. The Board of Regents' decision to pass over three candidates with traditional academic credentials in favor of Harreld is a signal that members believe the university should operate more like a nimble business and less like a slow-moving bureaucracy stuck in old thinking. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa's governing board has named a corporate management expert with little education experience as the school's next president. The choice is likely to stir criticism among professors who see him as unqualified and spark debate over whether business experience is enough to lead a major university.

In appeals court, BP seeks to get back some of the cash paid in Gulf oil spill business claims

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Attorneys for BP told a federal appeals court Thursday that the company should be able to get back some of the money it paid in economic damage claims to businesses and individuals under a settlement arising from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The company wants restitution of some of the money paid out prior to October 2013. Attorneys told the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that restitution could involve more than 790 businesses, with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.

3 charged in $54 million green-energy Ponzi scheme based on trash-to-fuel promise

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Three people were charged Thursday with running a $54 million Ponzi scheme built on promises of a green energy technology that would turn trash into fuel and "carbon-negative" housing developments, neither of which were ever fully developed, federal prosecutors said. Prosecutors said the trio lied to investors that their "biochar" technology and "carbon-negative" housing in Tennessee made millions, but they had almost no earnings and used the money to repay earlier investors and for themselves.
