Environmentalists urge New York, New Jersey governors to block natural gas terminal off coast

SEA BRIGHT, N.J. (AP) — Environmentalists and some elected officials are calling on the governors of New York and New Jersey to oppose a proposal for a liquefied natural gas import terminal off both states' coasts. Environmentalists say it's a dangerous potential terrorist target and is unneeded given that the United States is awash in cheap, domestic natural gas, much of which is produced in the Marcellus Shale formation just west of New York.

Obama begins selling complex Pacific trade agreement to business, agricultural leaders

WASHINGTON (AP) — Negotiations over the complex trade deal took more than five years. On Tuesday, President Barack Obama began what may be a similarly difficult task — selling the Trans-Pacific Partnership to Congress and the American public. Obama emphasized that the deal would eliminate or reduce more than 18,000 tariffs that participating countries impose on U.S. exports. The reduction of those tariffs will lower the price that international consumers pay for U.S. goods. For example, Obama said Japan currently puts a 38 percent tax on American beef and Malaysia currently puts a 30 percent tax on American auto parts.

Kansas cropland values down amid low grain prices, cattle prices pushing up value of pastures

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Low grain prices are driving down Kansas cropland values this year, while high prices for cattle are pushing up the value of pastures. Kansas State University agricultural economist Mykel Taylor researched property valuation records of actual sales transactions and found that they tended to be higher than those reported on government surveys, although general trends are the same. Taylor said Tuesday that her estimate is more reflective of the actual real estate market as it is happening, rather than a survey that asks landowners for their opinion of what their land may be worth.

US projects lower heating bills this winter, forecasts drop in energy prices, warmer weather

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Some U.S. households can expect to save hundreds of dollars this winter with a drop in heating bills, thanks to a combination of lower energy prices and warmer weather across most of the country, the U.S. Energy Department predicted Tuesday. The outlook is based on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast that calls for warmer weather across all regions except the West, which is expected to be slightly cooler.
