NEW YORK (AP) — America has rejected the idea of cappuccino-flavored Lay's potato chips. In the U.S., bags of the four finalist flavors hit shelves in late July and people were able to vote on Facebook and Twitter for their favorites through this past weekend. It was the second year for the U.S. contest, which is designed to send customers to stores in search of the flavors. Last year's winner, Cheesy Garlic Bread, is still on shelves.

Cyprus to block progress in Turkey's EU entry bid over offshore gas search row

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus says it will block any progress in Turkey's ongoing talks to join the European Union in response to a Turkish gas search in waters where the EU member has already licensed companies to drill. Cyprus was split along ethnic lines in 1974 when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of a union with Greece. Turkey doesn't recognize Cyprus as a state and opposes its offshore energy search.

US stocks open higher as companies report solid quarterly earnings; Apple, Harley-Davidson up

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening higher after several big companies reported results that pleased investors. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 15 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,919 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday. The Nasdaq composite rose 47 points, or 1.1 percent, to 4,364. The Dow Jones industrial average increased 70 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,461.
