Western Union second-quarter profit falls 2 percent; earnings top Wall Street view

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Western Union Co. (WU) on Thursday reported net income that declined by 2 percent in its second quarter. The profit matched analysts' expectations. The company said revenue rose 1 percent to $1.41 billion from $1.39 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, and missed Wall Street forecasts. Analysts expected $1.42 billion, according to Zacks.

USDA overhauls decades-old poultry inspections in effort to improve food safety

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is overhauling poultry plant inspections for the first time in more than 50 years, a move it says could result in 5,000 fewer foodborne illnesses each year. The changes would be voluntary, but many of the country's largest poultry companies are expected to opt in. The chicken and turkey industries swiftly praised the new rules, saying they would modernize their business.

Tesla posts bigger 2Q loss as it invests in Model X and prepares Nevada factory site

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — Electric car maker Tesla Motors widened its losses in the second quarter as it prepared for the launch of a new SUV and the construction of a massive new battery plant. The Palo Alto, California-based company reported a loss of $61.9 million, or 50 cents per share, compared with a loss of $30.5 million, or 26 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Metropolitan Opera asks federal mediator to resolve labor gridlock threatening lockout

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal mediator is on her way to New York to try to resolve a labor faceoff at the Metropolitan Opera. Gelb has demanded the Met's unions accept salary cuts of what he estimates at 17 percent. That's intended to cover a deficit of $2.8 million in the Met's $300 million annual budget.
