CHICAGO (AP) — A major Chicago health care system has apologized to nearly 3,000 patients whose personal information was on an unencrypted laptop that was stolen in October. The laptop was inside an employee's vehicle that was stolen Oct. 21, the hospital system said in a statement. The laptop was password-protected, but not encrypted. Officials said they are cooperating with law enforcement, and that they have no knowledge of whether the stolen patient data had been misused.

Prosecutors: Fraudster used investors' funds to have his wife's body cryogenically frozen

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors say a financial fraudster used backers' money to have his wife's body cryogenically frozen before fleeing New York for South America. That's among allegations in a federal indictment unveiled Friday against Whileon Chay. Manhattan federal prosecutors say Chay solicited more than $5 million from people for investment pools, misused and lost the money and bolstered his deceit with bogus account statements. They say he used some of the money to buy himself luxury cars, and over $150,000 of it to have his wife frozen after her 2009 death.

Sony hacking case combines rare blend of international intrigue and Hollywood star power

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The hackers who hit Sony Pictures Entertainment days before Thanksgiving crippled the network, stole gigabytes of data and spilled into public view unreleased films and reams of private and sometimes embarrassing executive emails. It was an extraordinarily public reaction from the highest levels of American government, considering that far more vital domestic interests have taken hits from foreign hackers in recent years. They include the military, major banks and makers of nuclear and solar power whose trade secrets were siphoned off in a matter of mouse clicks.
