Ga. judge won't stop state official from imposing rule aimed at protecting Vidalia onions

REIDSVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia judge Tuesday refused to intervene in a legal battle between a prominent Vidalia onion farmer and the state's agriculture commissioner over a new regulation aimed at keeping unripe onions from reaching store shelves. The court fight has pit Bland, who has roughly 3,000 acres invested in Vidalia onions, against Black as well as fellow farmers who fear onions being rushed to market are hurting the brand's reputation. Vidalia onion sales are estimated to be worth $150 million a year.

Wheat futures rise on concerns about cold US weather, Ukraine tensions; Gold rises 2 percent

Wheat futures are rising sharply for the second day in a row as cold temperatures hit the U.S. and as concerns build that Ukraine's grain exports could be disrupted. Wheat rose 23 cents, or 3 percent, to settle at $7.02 a bushel Tuesday. The price has risen nearly 7 percent over the last two days. In Ukraine, government forces took their first military action to suppress a pro-Russian uprising in the Eastern part of the country, repelling an attack by about 30 armed men at an airport.

Southern agrees to coal research with Chinese firm, including Kemper plant gasification method

(AP) — Southern Co. says it has signed a deal with a state-owned Chinese coal and energy company to work together to develop coal technologies, based in part on the coal gasification and carbon capture technology that Southern subsidiary Mississippi Power Co. is deploying at the $5 billion Kemper County power plant.

Intel reports lower 1st-quarter net income amid PC slump but revenue inches higher

NEW YORK (AP) — Intel's earnings fell in the first three months of the year amid a continued slump in the worldwide PC market, but revenue grew slightly because of solid demand for tablet processors and its data center services. Intel has been working to change that. Besides coming out with mobile-friendly chips, Intel is also expanding into new technologies such as wearable devices and everyday appliances. It bought a maker of fitness trackers, Basis Science, this year.
