Wyoming officials: Proposed EPA water regulations extend federal reach over private property

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming officials say they're disappointed with water quality regulations the federal government released Wednesday that would extend federal authority over smaller waterways such as tributaries and wetlands. The rules face stiff opposition from Gov. Matt Mead and members of Wyoming's congressional delegation. They warn the rules would extend federal influence over private farms and ranches.

Hopi Tribe, Arizona lawmakers ask feds for help in stopping French auction of sacred objects

PHOENIX (AP) — Hopi tribal leaders and Arizona congressmen are asking the federal government for help in preventing the sale of about a dozen sacred Hopi artifacts at a Paris auction house in June. Arizona's State representatives sent a letter asking the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI to take immediate action to prevent the sale of the religious artifacts on Thursday.

Just like foodies, beer geeks slake their thirst by hitting up the brewery next door

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — In a nondescript industrial park, beer geeks line up several times a week outside Bissell Brothers to get the latest batch of fresh beer — much like foodies seeking the freshest baguettes, pomegranates or kale. "To me it's huge that I get talk to the guy who's brewing my beer," the middle school teacher said. "I love that."

Florida coastal construction growing again, now worth $1.5T, but experts say storm risk isn't

MIAMI (AP) — Since eight hurricanes whipped through Florida during back-to-back seasons a decade ago, causing $33 billion in insurance claims, the state's coastal communities have added an additional 1.5 million people and almost a half-million new houses, an Associated Press analysis shows. The improvement derives from Florida's statewide building code, which was implemented in 2002, a decade after Hurricane Andrew's 165-mph winds gutted parts of South Florida. The code means that all new structures get tough inspections and are built with shatter-proof glass and straps reinforcing the connection between roof and walls.
