Smoke streams across sky from fire at Washington state oil refinery; no injuries

2 hours, 50 minutes ago

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A crude oil fire at the U.S. Oil and Refining Co. burned for almost two hours Wednesday, sending plumes of black smoke over the Port of Tacoma, but it didn't cause any injuries, according to a company spokesman. The blaze started at about 7 a.m. when one of the tubes that carries crude through a heat source that separates the oil began to leak, Yoder said. The operators quickly turned off the valve to stop the flow, but oil that was still in the tube caught fire, he said. That fire sent the black smoke up the tall stack, he said.

Health official says 'significant' 63,000-gallon brine spill reaches North Dakota lake

2 hours, 50 minutes ago

A 63,000-gallon saltwater spill that leaked from an underground pipeline entered a lake via a tributary in northwest North Dakota, a state Department of Health official said Wednesday. He said the spill will not affect any drinking water in the area. The most recent spill is "significant," Rockeman said, but it still pales next to a massive pipeline spill in January that leaked nearly 3 million gallons of brine, some of which reached two creeks and the Missouri River. Officials have said cleanup of that spill could take from several months to years.

Prosecutors: Exterminator tied up Philadelphia doctor after fight, then set her body on fire

2 hours, 56 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A pediatrician researching tuberculosis, HIV and other infectious diseases was strangled by an exterminator after she questioned his work and was then tied up with equestrian gear and set on fire, a prosecutor said Wednesday in opening statements at his murder trial. The trail quickly led to exterminator Jason Smith, the last person known to have visited her three-story row house on a quaint, narrow downtown street. He had not called police to mention his appointment there despite headlines about the case.

Belarus to make those who work less than half a year pay a $250 fine to the government

2 hours, 56 minutes ago

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Under a new measure in Belarus, people who work less than half the year will have to pay the government for their idleness. A statement from parliament, where the measure passed by a 100-2 vote, said "it's necessary to stimulate citizens who are capable of work and ensure they fulfill their constitutional obligation to take part in financing state expenditures."
