ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's first female prime minister, a top judge, was sworn in Thursday to head a caretaker government ahead of early elections next month in the bailout-dependent country. She will hold the position until a new government emerges from the vote expected on Sept. 20. Tsipras was forced to step down barely seven months into his four-year term following a rebellion in his radical left Syriza party over his agreement to the new income cuts and tax hikes.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Documents show it took more than 90 minutes for members of a federal cleanup crew to issue a warning about a toxic spill because they were initially trapped and scrambling to escape the flood they had accidentally unleashed from a Colorado mine. The EPA is facing increasing political pressure to explain how the accident happened despite prior warnings that it could occur.

Industry campaign against Medicare payment overhaul gets backing of famous amputees

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is trying to disentangle itself from another controversy over Medicare coverage. Amputees are protesting this time, fearing they'll be denied the latest technology for artificial legs and feet. Recently, Medicare's billing contractors proposed closer medical supervision of the independent technicians who sell and fit artificial limbs, as well as tighter rules for patients to qualify for high-tech devices that can cost as much as a car. The proposal is technical, but industry says it would translate to diminished quality of life for beneficiaries.
