Legislative committee boosts Idaho education budget by 7.4 percent, adding $101 million

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Legislative budget writers are matching Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter's request to restore public education money slashed during the economic downturn by adding roughly $101 million to the Idaho schools budget. The proposal includes allotting $33.5 million to boost teacher pay, part of a five-year teacher pay increase plan lawmakers approved earlier this week. This means beginning teacher pay will go up from $31,750 a year to $32,700 a year. The committee also approved giving $16.1 million in teacher bonuses.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota no longer has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation due in part to sliding oil drilling activity. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says North Dakota's jobless rate in February was 2.9 percent, up from 2.8 percent in January. The agency says Nebraska now has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation at 2.7 percent.

Co-pilot appeared healthy, but may have hidden illness, torn-up sick notes for day of crash

MONTABAUR, Germany (AP) — Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz appeared happy and healthy to acquaintances, but a picture emerged Friday of a man who hid evidence of an illness from his employers — including a torn-up doctor's note that would have kept him off work the day authorities say he crashed Flight 9525 into an Alpine mountainside.

Renewed bid planned as bankruptcy sale hearing of electronics retailer RadioShack drags on

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A lender who failed to win an auction this week for RadioShack's assets is planning to submit a new bid as a bankruptcy court hearing on the fate of the electronics retailer drags on. Salus says its new bid will be significantly better than its initial $271 million offer, which was contingent on future litigation results and was rejected.
