Do-it-yourself blood pressure care may surpass office-based treatment for some patients: Study

CHICAGO (AP) — "Do-it-yourself" blood pressure measurements and medicine changes work better than usual doctor-office care in some patients, a study of older adults in England found. Self-care patients weren't completely on their own — any changes they made were part of a treatment plan previously OK'd by their doctors. But the patients didn't need to consult their doctors every time they increased the dose if it was part of the original treatment plan.

Bankrupt Detroit resumes shutting off water to residents despite international criticism

DETROIT (AP) — Bankrupt Detroit resumed shutting off water to people who have not paid bills after a month long suspension that followed international and local criticism that the practice was unduly harsh to residents of one of the nation's poorest cities. Detroit filed the nation's largest-ever municipal bankruptcy last year and has struggled to manage basic services.

Essay: Creatures of habit, Emmy voters owe new shows and stars a better chance

NEW YORK (AP) — There was something embarrassing about the rash of repeat treating on Monday's Emmycast. It might have left viewers wondering if they had stumbled on a rerun of last year's show, or the one before that. Or maybe an awards show equivalent of "Groundhog Day." Nothing against these winners, especially the honors-showered "Breaking Bad," the finest drama series in recent television history. But repeat recognition can become wretched excess. Monday's Emmycast might have left viewers wondering whether anything new on TV happened last season.

Global warming already dangerous, risks being irreversible, says new UN global warming report

WASHINGTON (AP) — Global warming is here, human-caused and probably already dangerous — and it's increasingly likely that the heating trend could be irreversible, a draft of a new international science report says. The 127-page draft, obtained by The Associated Press, paints a harsh warning of what's causing global warming and what it will do to humans and the environment. It also describes what can be done about it.
