NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks said Thursday that its revamped breakfast sandwiches and other new menu items helped boost sales at its U.S. cafes. Troy Alstead, chief financial officer for Starbucks, said in a phone interview that an uptick in food purchases contributed to the chain's higher sales in the U.S. In particular, Alstead noted that sales of breakfast sandwiches are up 40 percent from a year ago. Starbucks has also been rolling out new baked goods in its cafes. Additionally, the company benefited from price hikes during the period.

House and Senate veterans chairmen offer competing bills to reduce VA patient waits

WASHINGTON (AP) — With Congress scheduled to recess in a week, the chairmen of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs committees offered competing proposals Thursday to fix a veterans' health care program scandalized by long patient wait times and falsified records covering up the delays. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., chairman of the Senate panel, made the first move, announcing a proposal that would cost about $25 billion over three years to lease new clinics, hire thousands of doctors and nurses, and make it easier for veterans who can't get prompt appointments with VA doctors to get outside care.

Federal appeals court reverses decision ordering hearings on antibiotics in livestock

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration isn't required to hold public hearings to evaluate the health risks of widespread use of antibiotics in animal feed, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday. The health groups want the FDA to withdraw approval of using penicillin and tetracycline in animal feed to make cattle and other livestock grow faster. They say the practice has been linked to an increase to human resistance to antibiotics, while industry groups argue the issue needs more study.
