More people living in poverty across Washington state, newly released Census data show

SEATTLE (AP) — More people were living in poverty in Washington state in 2013 than in 2012, even as the numbers remained steady across the nation. That's according to new figures being released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The American Community Survey finds that nearly 970,000 Washington residents, or 14.1 percent, were in poverty in 2013, compared to about 915,000, or 13.5 percent, in 2012.

Longtime cast member Darrell Hammond takes over as 'SNL' announcer for Don Pardo

NEW YORK (AP) — A familiar face — former cast member Darrell Hammond — is taking over for a familiar voice at "Saturday Night Live." For all but one year of the NBC show's 40-year history, it was Pardo's voice that would announce the host, musical guest and cast members every week, and he continued the job even after he retired to Arizona. Pardo died at age 96 on Aug. 18.

US stock market rises after drop in jobless claims and Fed meeting; Scotland votes.

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market headed higher Thursday as investors received more encouraging news on the economy. The slight gains come a day after the Federal Reserve signaled that it's in no rush to raise interest rates. JOBS: Fewer Americans filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week, according to the Labor Department. Weekly applications fell 36,000 to 280,000, well below economists' forecasts. The four-week average, a less-volatile measure, also dropped.

James Clapper said he spoke in error about NSA surveillance as he rolls out new intel strategy

WASHINGTON (AP) — James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, denied Thursday that he lied to Congress about government surveillance last year, and he rolled out a new national intelligence strategy that includes principles of ethics for intelligence officers. Clapper said he misspoke when he denied in a Senate hearing last year that the U.S. was collecting data on millions of Americans. Leaks by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden subsequently showed the National Security Agency has been gathering and storing American telephone calling records for years.
