Ag equipment sales down; manufacturers, farmers blame lower crop prices, change to tax break

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Agricultural equipment manufacturers and farmers say machinery sales have fallen recently because of lower commodity prices and changes to a federal tax break. John Horter owns a farm in Andover, South Dakota. He says the slump in income has forced him to delay some equipment upgrades.

Detroit's breakneck speed hastened start of largest US municipal bankruptcy trial this week

DETROIT (AP) — It took decades of mismanagement, malfeasance and meltdowns in its bread-and-butter manufacturing sector for Detroit to hit fiscal rock bottom. The path to exit bankruptcy could take less than a year and a half. Massive debt, thousands of creditors and complex union and pension issues had many experts thinking Detroit's bankruptcy would take years to resolve, considering two California cities — Stockton and San Bernardino — filed a year before Detroit did and still haven't settled on plans.

Detroit's breakneck speed hastened start of largest US municipal bankruptcy trial this week

DETROIT (AP) — The trial to determine whether bankrupt Detroit's restructuring plan will be approved is set to begin just over a year after the city sought court protection in July 2013. The confirmation trial for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history starts Tuesday in federal court. Bill Nowling, spokesman for Detroit's emergency manager, says the city hopes to cut $12 billion in unsecured debt to a "much more manageable" $5 billion.

Scale will matter for success of New York casinos as gambling expands into crowded market

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Racino revenue is down. Casinos are closing in Atlantic City, while new ones are opening in Maryland and Massachusetts. Yet New York is just now getting into the game, with more than a dozen groups lining up to open upstate casinos. They liken it to a Goldilocks zone: The facility must be grand enough to lure customers, with the glitz of amenities and the feel of a resort but not something so big and expensive that it doesn't break even in a competitive market.
