US official: Auto safety agency under review after air bag, ignition switch recalls criticized

WASHINGTON (AP) — Transportation officials are reviewing the "safety culture" of the federal agency that oversees auto recalls, a senior Obama administration official said Friday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been criticized by lawmakers and safety advocates for not acting aggressively enough regarding millions of vehicles with defective air bags or faulty ignition switches.

Canada loses bid to make Ford engines to Mexico after government refuses Ford's terms

DETROIT (AP) — Canada has lost to Mexico in a bid to build engines for Ford Motor Co. But on Friday, Unifor and the Canadian government said they were unable to reach an agreement with Ford on incentives for the new work. Jake Enwright, a spokesman for Canadian Industry Minister James Moore, said Ford recently made an "unprecedented request" but gave no details.

NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market is closing out its best week in almost two years as earnings gains from Microsoft and others got investors in a buying mood. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 127 points, or 0.8 percent, to 16,805 Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 13 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,964. The Nasdaq composite rose 30 points, or 0.7 percent, to 4,483.
