6 p.m. About 400 people have marched in Chicago, some to protest recent police shootings and some to recognize May Day's message of workers' rights. Seventy-three-year-old activist Richard Malmin says he participates every year but that this rally is bigger due to the death of Freddie Gray, whose spine was severed while in Baltimore police custody last month. Activists added anti-police brutality to their messages.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state of emergency was declared Friday by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad with nearly 17 million chickens and turkeys dead, dying or scheduled to be euthanized due to a widening bird flu outbreak. It also allows state agencies to help in the disposal of poultry carcasses, an increasing problem in a state where about 27 percent of its 60 million egg-laying chickens will be wiped out.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Nicolas Maduro raised Venezuela's minimum wage Friday to help workers being battered by the world's highest inflation. The wage increase, while a welcome relief for many workers, fell short of expectations that the embattled Maduro might use Friday's celebrations to expand state control of the slumping economy.

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — The police chief in Warwick said his department has stopped accepting a daily guest list from a city motel with a high crime rate.
