Drugmaker AbbVie hikes 2014 forecast, topping Street expectations, also beats 3Q predictions

The drugmaker AbbVie surprised Wall Street on Friday with a third-quarter performance that turned out much better than expected and a new 2014 forecast that also extends well beyond what analysts predict. The maker of the Chrohn's disease treatment Humira raised its guidance for the second time this year. It now expects earnings excluding one-time items to range between $3.25 and $3.27 per share in 2014. That's up from its previous forecast for $3.06 to $3.16 per share.

Exxon posts surprise 3Q profit jump on refining, chemicals as oil price, production falls

NEW YORK (AP) — ExxonMobil Corp.'s refining and chemical operations rescued the company's third quarter results amid falling global oil prices and lower oil and gas production. The company said Friday it earned $8.07 billion on revenue of $107.49 billion in the third quarter. Last year during the same period, Exxon earned $7.87 billion on revenue of $112.37 billion.

Nissan recalling 2 Infiniti SUVs to fix air bag inflators that can explode with too much force

DETROIT (AP) — Nissan says it's recalling more than 1,800 Infiniti SUVs in the U.S. for an air bag problem that could send shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Nissan has no reports of injuries from the problem. It was discovered after General Motors recalled 33,000 Cruze compact cars for the same problem in June. The Infiniti recall is part of a larger global recall of 260,000 Nissans announced last week.

UK Treasury chief set to pay off some of bonds that financed World War I

LONDON (AP) — Britain is repaying some of the 2 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) it still owes investors who helped finance World War I. The debts were consolidated in 1927 into a single bond paying 4 percent annual interest. The bond has no maturity date, so Treasury wasn't required to repay the principle as long as it made regular interest payments. Britain has paid 1.26 billion pounds in interest since the bonds were first issued by then-Chancellor Winston Churchill.
