USDA revises maple syrup grading standards with more descriptive, universal terms

2 hours, 40 minutes ago

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Grading standards for maple syrup have been revised to match international standards, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday, and now consumers can have a better understanding of what topping they're buying. The move comes in response to a 2010 petition from the International Maple Syrup Institute, which represents maple producers in the U.S. and Canada, saying the different grading systems in different states made it confusing to consumers.

US stock market edges higher ahead of Fed policy statement; strong earnings lift Apple, Boeing

2 hours, 50 minutes ago

Strong earnings from Apple, Boeing and other companies helped nudge U.S. stocks slightly higher in midday trading Wednesday. FED WATCH: The Fed ends its first policy meeting of the year Wednesday afternoon, after which it is widely expected to repeat its pledge to stay patient in raising interest rates from record lows. Inflation has fallen further below the Fed's target rate, thanks to plunging oil prices and a surging dollar that makes imports cheaper. That could prompt the Fed to delay any rate increases beyond June, the earliest that most economists predict the Fed will raise rates.

Babtist said Thompson was arrested along with his longtime companion, Alison Anteiker, and the two had been staying in a two-person suite at a Hilton in West Boca Raton for two years.

Stock market rises at midday after strong earnings from Apple; investors await Fed statement

2 hours, 54 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market is rising slightly at midday as investors wait for the Federal Reserve's latest policy statement. The Fed statement, due later Wednesday, is widely expected to repeat the pledge that the central bank will be "patient" in raising interest rates. Low rates are a key driver of the nearly six-year bull market for stocks.
