Vermont unemployment rate drops to 3.4 percent; fourth lowest in the country

(AP) — The Vermont Department of Labor says the state's unemployment rate dropped three-tenths of a percent last month to 3.4 percent, the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country. She says a goal for her department now is helping employers find workers. Still, the department needs to ensure people are "career-ready."

Alabama unemployment rate jumps to 6.7 percent

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama's unemployment rate is rising. The state Department of Labor says Alabama's March unemployment rate is 6.7 percent, which is three-tenths of a percent higher than the February rate. It's also above the March 2013 rate of 6.6 percent. The job rate represents 144,628 unemployed people. But the number of people in the labor force also grew by more than 14,000 people, and the number of working Alabamians increased by 7,000.

Missouri legislation would grant tax breaks to restaurants, grocers, convenience stores

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pizza parlors, doughnut shops and even convenience stores all could be in line for a tax break on the food that they make and sell as a result of a measure moving through the Missouri Legislature. The Department of Revenue estimates the legislation could reduce total state revenues by between $4 million and $20 million annually.

Ohio hits private prison food vendor with $142,100 fine for failure to meet staffing levels

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The private food vendor that holds the contract for feeding Ohio's 50,000 prisoners has repeatedly failed to meet the staffing levels it promised, the state announced Friday as it hit the company with $142,100 in fines. Aramark also failed to meet the staffing requirement of a minimum of 414 positions called for in the contract, and failed to have a certified food service manager for several months at the state's Southeastern Correctional Complex Hocking Unit in Nelsonville.
