Stock market sags at close as investors weigh weaker growth; January is worst month in a year

The U.S. stock market capped a rough month Friday, delivering its third loss in five days and extending its declines for the year. On Friday, investors also weighed the consequences of a slowdown in U.S. economic growth and how further strength in the dollar could dent corporate profits. "The real issue still is the confusion, the uncertainty around the speed of decline in oil prices and what that means, and the rise in the dollar and what that means for earnings," said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management.

Justice Department to provide memo on surveillance after suit from privacy group

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has agreed to turn over a legal opinion regarding government surveillance and census data after a years-long court fight with a privacy group. That group in 2011 sued to obtain documents about government surveillance under the Patriot Act. Among the records it sought was an opinion that analyzed law enforcement access to census data under a section of the Patriot Act that the National Security Agency relied on to collect bulk phone records.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Restaurant servers and other tipped workers in New York state would make $7.50 an hour before tips under a proposal recommended by a state wage board Friday "For far too long, wages for tipped workers in New York State have been too low," Cuomo said in a statement. "Today the Wage Board has recommended a course that begins to rectify that."

Goodrich Petroleum cuts oil drilling in Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in La. and Miss. on low prices

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Low oil prices mean the driller that has been the most bullish on an oil region that straddles the Louisiana-Mississippi line is cutting back. The company had projected that it would drill 16 to 21 wells in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale region in southwest Mississippi and Louisiana's Florida Parishes. A spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, but the new budget will mean fewer wells drilled in 2015.
