Judge tosses lawsuit over New Jersey bridge lane closings; plaintiffs can refile some counts

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed a class-action lawsuit filed by people who were stuck in traffic when lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge were closed without warning in 2013, but an attorney for the plaintiffs vowed Tuesday to file an amended complaint. The consolidated class-action complaint is a combination of two lawsuits filed in early 2014, several months after the lane closings at the bridge caused massive gridlock in Fort Lee. The judge would still have to certify the case as a class action.

Environmentalists call of California governor to block fracking permits for Long Beach Harbor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Environmentalists Tuesday called on California Gov. Jerry Brown to halt plans for months of hydraulic fracturing in the waters off Southern California, warning that it could lead to chemical pollution or an oil spill. Hydraulic fracturing is used to extract oil or natural gas from rock formations by injecting high-pressure mixtures of water, sand or gravel and chemicals. The Center for Biological Diversity said the permits open the way for the first offshore fracking in the state since 2013.

Acting VA inspector general Griffin retires amid criticism

WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting inspector general of the Department of Veterans Affairs is retiring, a year after he issued a scathing report on problems at the Phoenix VA hospital. In a May 2014 report, Griffin cited problems at the Phoenix hospital over long patient wait times and falsification of records to cover up the delays. The report and resulting scandal led to the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki.
