CHICAGO (AP) — Grain futures were mixed Wednesday in early trading on the Chicago Board of Trade. Beef was mostly lower and pork was higher on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. August live cattle was .38 cent higher at $1.5100 a pound; August feeder cattle was .35 cent lower at $2.1925 a pound; July lean hogs gained 1.20 cents to $.8400 a pound.

Obama administration issues rules to protect drinking water from pollution, regulate streams

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration issued new rules Wednesday to protect the nation's drinking water and clarify which smaller streams, tributaries and wetlands are covered by anti-pollution and development provisions of the Clean Water Act. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said the rule will only affect waters that have a "direct and significant" connection to larger bodies of water downstream that are already protected. The EPA has said 60 percent of the nation's streams and waterways are vulnerable, and these rules clarify which of those waters are protected. The regulations would only kick in if a business or landowner intends to pollute or destroy those waters.

Amid ongoing struggles, McDonald's to stop reporting monthly sales results

NEW YORK (AP) — McDonald's says it will stop reporting its monthly sales results as the company works to fix its struggling business. During the presentation, Easterbrook also detailed some of the changes the company is making to improve business. In the U.S., for instance, he said the company is toasting buns longer to improve the taste of its burgers. He also said the company is working on speeding up wait times at the drive-thru, which accounts for about 70 percent of sales.

South Carolina's unemployment rate stays at 6.7 percent in April

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — There was no change in South Carolina's unemployment rate last month, according to data released Wednesday by state officials. Nationally, unemployment dipped from 5.5 percent to 5.4 percent. Workforce officials say that overall employment in South Carolina set a record last month, at more than 2.1 million people. The state's labor force also hit a record high at more than 2.2 million.
