NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks said Thursday its revamped breakfast sandwiches and other food offerings helped boost sales at its U.S. cafes. In a conference call with analysts, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said food has become a strength and drives traffic to cafes, and that the company was just getting started in its efforts in improving its lineup.

Amazon shares fall on deeper-than-expected 2nd-quarter loss

SEATTLE (AP) — Shares of Amazon.com Inc. fell Thursday after the e-commerce retailer reported a deeper-than-expected second quarter loss as expenses outpaced a surge in revenue. The company has been heavily investing in services for its loyalty program, Prime, which costs $99 a year, and includes free two-day shipping on many items. It has added a grocery delivery services and music streaming for Prime Members as well as offering original TV shows and apps. It also expanded Sunday deliveries and recently began offering a set-top video streaming box.

CEO Dan Hesse's $49 million 2013 pay package, saying it's excessive and not tied to performance. Shareholders will vote on approving the executive pay package on Aug. 6. The vote is only advisory, but boards take "no" votes seriously.

Obama: Downed plane in Ukraine may 'stiffen the spine' of Europe as it weighs Russia sanctions

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the downing of a passenger jet in Ukraine "may stiffen the spine of our European partners" as they consider additional sanctions against Russia. The European Union agreed Thursday to add more names to the list of Russians and pro-Russian Ukrainians subject to EU-wide asset freezes and travel bans. The EU is also considering broader measures that target key sectors of the Russian economy and could act on those penalties next week.
