TV meteorologist in central Texas shot while in studio parking lot; authorities seek gunman

BRUCEVILLE-EDDY, Texas (AP) — Authorities from multiple law enforcement agencies are combing the area around a remote Central Texas television studio where a morning meteorologist was shot in a parking lot after an argument. The station website reports the victim, on-air meteorologist Patrick Crawford, backed his car away from the shooter and drove up to a highway construction crew that called 911. Jim Hice, the station's news director, says Crawford was wounded in the shoulder and the abdomen.

Indiana officer asked to stop selling 'divisive' shirts referencing NYC man's chokehold death

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Some officials in the Indiana city of South Bend have called on a police officer to stop selling T-shirts that make light of the "I can't breathe" refrain used in recent protests of the police killing of a New York City man. Members of Notre Dame's women's basketball team wore T-shirts before Saturday's game against Michigan emblazoned with the message "I can't breathe." Those were the last words of Eric Garner, a black man who died in July in New York City after a white police officer placed him in a chokehold while trying to arrest Garner for allegedly illegally selling single cigarettes.

Judge dismisses painkillers lawsuit against NFL, telling union and league to resolve issues

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit by 1,300 former players against the NFL, writing that the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the union was the appropriate forum to resolve claims that teams damaged the players' by routinely dispensing painkillers. Last month, Alsup asked the NFL Players' Association to state its position on the lawsuit. The union responded that the collective bargaining agreement did not provide a mechanism to file grievances over the handling of painkillers on behalf of former players.

Marcus posts 2Q profit, results beat Wall Street estimates

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Marcus Corp. (MCS) on Thursday reported profit of $5.2 million in its fiscal second quarter. The Milwaukee-based company said it had profit of 19 cents per share. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 14 cents per share.
