NEW YORK (AP) — What I find fascinating about Amazon's Fire phone isn't the gizmos such as the 3-D imagery or the camera scanner that helps you get more information about products. Rather, I like that Amazon is thinking a lot about how phones ought to work. The iPhone and its Android smartphone rivals are so much alike that companies have been suing each other for stealing ideas. The Fire phone uses Android, but Amazon has modified it to the point that it's barely recognizable.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Fortune 500 packaging company Sealed Air Corp. will consolidate management operations from several states and relocate its New Jersey headquarters to the Charlotte area, where it plans to employ nearly 1,300 jobs in three years. The site consolidation was designed to increase collaboration and efficiency, Chief Executive Officer Jerome A. Peribere said.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Federal and state investigators are at a Williston oil supply and logistics company where a massive fire erupted and disrupted road and air traffic. She said it's uncertain when they'll determine the cause of the blaze that started midnight Monday and sent fireballs hundreds of feet into the air. The fire has since been extinguished.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stock indexes were mostly higher in late-morning trading Wednesday as investors weighed positive earnings in the technology sector against disappointing news out of aircraft giant Boeing and the appliance maker Whirlpool. Biotechnology stocks were among the biggest gainers. BIG TECH: Apple reported higher quarterly profits after the market closed Tuesday, topping analysts' estimates. Sales of iPads slipped, but iPhone shipments increased 13 percent over the same period a year earlier. Apple rose $2.82, or 3 percent, to $97.54.
