Nearby casino to buy Fairmount Park pending approval of slot machines at Illinois horse tracks

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The owners of an East St. Louis casino plan to purchase the struggling Fairmount Park racetrack, provided Illinois lawmakers agree to allow a gambling expansion that would bring slot machines to the state's five horse racing venues. The deal comes as lawmakers facing a roughly $6 billion deficit in the state budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 again are considering an expansion of gambling that could include a Chicago casino. Racing industry officials want approval to add slots to keep up with nearby states that have already paired casinos with ponies.

Stocks decline broadly on Greece debt worries; oil, energy stocks hit hard

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks fell broadly Tuesday as investors fretted about Greece's debt crisis and soft demand for durable goods last month. A surge in the dollar pushed down energy prices, and, in turn, oil and gas stocks. The sell-off was broad. Four stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Only 27 stocks in the S&P 500 were higher.

Media CEOs dominate ranks of highest-paid executives, annual study shows

NEW YORK (AP) — They're not Hollywood stars, they're not TV personalities and they don't play in a rock band, but their pay packages are in the same league. The best-paid chief executive of a large American company was David Zaslav, head of Discovery Communications, the pay-TV channel operator that is home to "Shark Week." His total compensation more than quadrupled to $156.1 million in 2014 after he extended his contract.
