WASHINGTON (AP) — A French power and transportation company has agreed to pay $772 million in penalties to resolve allegations that it bribed government officials in multiple foreign countries for lucrative projects, the Justice Department said Monday. "Alstom's corruption scheme was sustained over more than a decade and across several continents," Deputy Attorney James Cole said at a news conference. "It was astonishing in its breadth, its brazenness, and its worldwide consequences."

Northwest Missouri Superfund site still passing tests decades later

AMAZONIA, Mo. (AP) — Tests show that a former northwest Missouri landfill that once was among the country's most polluted spots poses little risk today, 20 years after cleanup work was completed at the site. The Environmental Protection Agency put the site on the Superfund list in 1989, shortly after it earned the agency's highest-possible score for toxicity. Superfund status brought federal funds to aid in a cleanup and containment project, which was completed in 1994.

US stock indexes edge higher in midday trading, extending market gains into a fourth day

U.S. financial markets drifted slightly higher in midday trading Monday, although the gains were held back by discouraging data on U.S. home sales and a deepening slide in oil prices. Stocks have notched gains the past three trading days. SANTA RALLY: Stocks are continuing a pre-Christmas advance, which traders often refer to as a "Santa" rally. Major indexes ended last week on a strong note, finishing higher three days in a row. The Dow and S&P 500 are both up for the month, while the Nasdaq is down.
