China stocks rally to 7-year high, other world markets restrained ahead of Yellen speech

HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese stocks hit a seven-year high as investors pinned their hopes on further economic stimulus while most other world markets were subdued Friday ahead of a speech by Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen. CHINA RALLY: Investors who weren't allocated shares in recent initial public offerings are plowing the money back into the market, sending it higher, said Andrew Sullivan, a sales trader at Haitong Securities. They're also betting that the economic stimulus that has powered the Chinese rally will continue after recent poor economic indicators such as a disappointing manufacturing index on Thursday. "Even when you've got bad news, stocks are going up anyway," Sullivan said. "It is just pure liquidity, it's not fundamental in anyway.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says there's a 'whole lot left' to be done on Greece bailout

RIGA, Latvia (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday added urgency to the talks between Athens and its international creditors, saying after a meeting with Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras that "very, very intensive work is still needed." The "friendly and constructive exchange" came after a leading official from Tsipras' party warned that Greece will not be able to repay a loan to the International Monetary Fund on June 5 unless a deal is reached with its creditors to unblock bailout funds.

Tuk Tuk Factory _ maker of auto rickshaws popular in Asia _ aims to make inroads in US

DENVER (AP) — They're ubiquitous in Asia, swarming the bustling streets of Bangkok, New Delhi and Beijing. Now, a company that manufactures the tuk-tuk — the three-wheeled motorized rickshaws that have moved the masses for more than half a century — aims to make inroads in the United States. The Tuk Tuk Factory, based in Amsterdam, has signed a licensing agreement with Denver-based eTuk USA to allow the company to manufacture and sell an electric version of the vehicle. The company's founders hope the eco-friendly vehicles, a far cry from the loud, pollution-spewing versions common in Asia and South America, will become the next hip mode of transportation for urban dwellers and tourists across the country.

The mega-travel tours of Chinese direct marketers stun world, draw pride and critique at home

BEIJING (AP) — All-expenses-paid trips to reward top salespeople aren't unusual, but direct marketing companies that are the Chinese versions of Amway, Avon and Herbalife are taking it to an extreme by sending thousands abroad on package tours. Earlier this month, a medicinal products group sent 6,000 of its representatives to France where they set a world record by massing the most people to spell out a phrase that included their own firm's name. Yet another Chinese direct seller sent 7,000 people to California last year.
