Utilities ask Conn. to back large natural gas plan

1 hour, 3 minutes ago

Connecticut's regulated utilities have wasted no time seizing on a new state energy policy passed by the legislature less than two weeks ago to encourage natural gas hookups. In its proposal, Yankee Gas, a subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, said capital spending would be $35 million next year and more than $96 million in 2015 and 2106. The Southern Connecticut Gas Co. said capital spending will be $61 million in the three years while Connecticut Natural Gas expects capital spending of about $47 million in the same period.

Quinn, Ill. lawmakers plan pension talks into July

1 hour, 3 minutes ago

Unable to overcome a stalemate on the state's $97 billion pension crisis, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and legislative leaders have agreed to form a bipartisan committee to hammer out a compromise and to reconvene the Legislature for another session in July. The agreement was announced after it became clear that lawmakers would not overcome their impasse this week, and after Madigan warmed to the idea of a bipartisan committee to negotiate some form of middle ground between two rival pension reform plans that have split the House and Senate.

Bump in Wash. revenue may avert gov't shutdown

1 hour, 7 minutes ago

Substantial improvements in Washington's financial outlook provided state lawmakers with a pathway to resolve their budget differences Tuesday, and negotiators expressed optimism they would avoid any government shutdown. "It's not as if the revenue debate is gone," Sullivan said. Budget writers have some $300 million more in room to maneuver after Tuesday's updated forecasts. That includes $110 million extra in the current budget cycle which would be available for one-time use in the next budget, an additional $120 million improvement in the revenue outlook for the next two-year budget cycle and $90 million in money available because of less reliance on government services.
