JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Several hours of searching Indonesian waters turned up no sign of an AirAsia plane that disappeared Sunday with 162 people on board in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning, officials said. The plane took off Sunday morning from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, and was about halfway to its destination, Singapore, when it vanished from radar.

Here's a look at the key developments. __ The last communication between the pilot and air traffic control is made at 6:13 a.m. (2313 GMT Saturday), when the pilot asks to turn left and climb to 34,000 feet (10,360 meters) to "avoid clouds," according to Djoko Murjatmodjo, Indonesia's acting director general of transportation, who also said there was no distress signal from the cockpit.

BERLIN (AP) — The president of Germany's central bank is questioning the need for the European Central Bank to embark on a new bond-buying program when the continent is being "gifted a stimulus program" by low oil prices. Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann, a member of the ECB governing council, told Sunday's Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper that German growth forecasts for next year don't reflect the extent of the oil price fall — so growth could be better than expected.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is on the verge of proposing long-awaited rules for commercial drone operations in U.S. skies, but key decisions on how much access to grant drones are likely to come from Congress next year. That's too long to wait, say drone industry officials. Every year the ban remains in place, the United States loses more than $10 billion in potential economic benefits that drones could provide, according to the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, a trade group.
