PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The mother of a 22-year-old Maine man who tried to launch a firework off the top of his head for July Fourth and was killed instantly says she's advocating for stricter controls about who can use the explosives. Kathleen Staples says she is going to reach out to lawmakers about the possibility of tighter controls over fireworks. She says the state should consider requiring safety training courses before allowing someone to use them. She compared fireworks with other regulated items such as cars and guns.

US stocks slip after Greeks reject terms of bailout deal; European markets, oil drop sharply

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks in the U.S. fell broadly following drops in overseas markets as Greeks voted to reject creditor conditions for more loans, but the losses weren't as steep as many had feared. Still, many investors were clearly nervous, putting money into assets considered safe bets in turbulent times such as gold and U.S. government bonds. A rout in the stocks of oil drillers and other energy companies fed the selling as the price oil plunged nearly 8 percent.

Plans emerge for new casino-hotel called Alon on site of New Frontier on Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Initial plans for a casino-hotel that may rise from the Las Vegas Strip site where the New Frontier once stood show two hotel towers with 1,100 rooms and a 126,000-square-foot space for a water feature inside. It represents the latest in efforts to fill in dormant sites on the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip with new resort-casinos including Genting Group's $4 billion sprawling Resorts World development expected to open by mid-2018, along with a plan by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to raze the Riviera hotel-casino and extend the convention center to the Strip.
