Automakers, government to reveal models in expanded Takata air bag inflator recall

DETROIT (AP) — Automakers and governments are announcing additional models covered by last week's massive expansion of a Takata air bag recall. Six people have been killed and more than 100 injured due to the problem. Last week the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Takata of Japan agreed to double the number of inflators it recalled to 33.8 million. But the makes and models were not available. The increase made it the largest auto recall in U.S. history, according to the agency.

US, global stock markets down as Shanghai index tumbles, Greece deadline looms

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks were modestly lower in afternoon trading Thursday, following a steep sell-off in the Chinese stock market and the approaching deadline for cash-starved Greece to make a debt payment. MORE M&A: Chipmakers Avago Technologies and Broadcom agreed to merge in a $37 billion deal. Avago was down 87 cents, or 1 percent, to $140.64. Broadcom was down $1.51, or 3 percent, to $55.65. However both of those stocks jumped sharply Wednesday -- Broadcom by 22 percent and Avago by 8 percent -- on rumors those companies were in merger talks.

Obama administration urges federal judge to dismiss House GOP health care lawsuit

WASHINGTON (AP) — Obama administration attorneys urged a federal judge Thursday to throw out a politically charged lawsuit by House Republicans over the president's health care law, but encountered plenty of skeptical questions. "I have a very hard time taking that statement seriously," Collyer said. She ended the hearing without ruling, telling both parties: "I have lots of ideas. I just haven't decided yet."
