86 sentenced in Macedonia highway toll scam case

A criminal court in Macedonia's capital has sentenced 86 employees of a road management company to prison terms ranging from eight months to more than six years for involvement in a massive highway toll scam. The prosecution alleged the defendants made about 1.7 million euros from the scam. The main suspect in the case was sentenced to six years and three months in prison. He and three other men convicted as organizers of the group are to remain in custody pending the outcome of an expected appeal.

ING US 1Q loss narrows

The financial services company ING U.S. Inc. said Thursday that its first-quarter loss narrowed, helped by better results at its retirement and annuities businesses. Excluding certain items, the company said it posted an adjusted profit of 73 cents per share for the recent quarter. Pretax operating earnings rose 11 percent at the retirement business to $137.8 million and jumped 49 percent to $54.3 million at its annuities business.
