Maine governor to stop talking to 3 newspapers

Maine's blunt-spoken governor doesn't mince words when opponents dare to cross him but he's saved some of his harshest criticism for newspapers, once telling schoolchildren he isn't a fan of papers and another time saying that reading one is "like paying somebody to tell you lies." Adrienne Bennett, the governor's press secretary, said Wednesday that it was her decision to give a blanket "no comment" to the Portland Press Herald, the Kennebec Journal in the state capital of Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, where LePage once served as mayor. All three daily newspapers are part of MaineToday Media Inc.

House votes to cut food stamps by $2 billion

The House voted on Wednesday to cut food stamps by $2 billion a year as part of a wide-ranging farm bill. The food stamp cuts have complicated passage of the bill and its farm-state supporters were working to secure votes Wednesday. Many conservatives have said the food stamp cuts do not go far enough since the program has doubled in cost in the last five years and now feeds 1 in 7 Americans. Liberals have argued against any reductions, contending the House plan could take as many as 2 million needy recipients off the rolls. The White House has threatened a veto over the food stamp cuts.

Dotcom 'in tears' after Megaupload files deleted

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom says he's "in tears" after a European company announced it had deleted all the data it was hosting from the shuttered file-sharing site. Netherlands-based LeaseWeb announced Thursday it had deleted all Megaupload files from 630 servers. LeaseWeb said it hosted the data for over a year without receiving any requests to retain it. But Dotcom said on Twitter that his lawyers repeatedly asked LeaseWeb to keep the data pending U.S. court proceedings.
