NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) — An Amtrak train destined for Washington, D.C., derailed in central Vermont on Monday after striking rocks that fell from a ledge onto the tracks. Seven people were injured, including one who was airlifted to a hospital. At an afternoon news conference, officials said the train hit rocks that had fallen onto the tracks from a ledge above. One locomotive and one passenger car went over an embankment, and three other cars left the track but remained upright.

Authorities say 47-year-old Francesca Figueroa was apparently moving out of the second floor during the blast Saturday. Her sister, Nicura, told reporters her sister is missing.

Bernanke: US economy outperforming Europe because Fed moved more quickly to fight downturn

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says the U.S. economy is outperforming Europe at the moment because the Fed moved more quickly and aggressively to fight the 2008 financial crisis than Europe did. Bernanke credited those differences to aggressive efforts by the Fed to jump-start economic growth. He said the Fed started six years ahead of moves by the European Central Bank.
