MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine asked Russia on Friday for lower gas prices for the winter and said Moscow should accept to write off a part of its loans to Kiev, as other international bondholders did this week. Russia and Ukraine last year struck an emergency deal on prices through the winter. That deal has expired, however, and the sides have to hold new talks if Ukraine is to receive more Russian gas.

US consumer spending post moderate rise in July; wages and salaries make big jump

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumers increased their spending moderately in July, as wages and salaries made their biggest jump in eight months. Incomes increased 0.4 percent in July. The key category of wages and salaries rose 0.5 percent, the biggest advance since last November. The report indicates that consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity, got off to a good start in the third quarter. The result suggests that strong momentum from the second quarter rolled into July.

Mylan shareholders endorse proposed acquisition of Perrigo, expects to make formal offer soon

NEW YORK (AP) — Mylan NV's shareholders approved the company's hostile pursuit of Perrigo Co. and the generic drugmaker hopes to push ahead with a formal offer soon. A combination of the two companies would create one of the world's largest makers of generic and over-the-counter medications. In April, Mylan raised its offer for Perrigo to $232.23, or about $34.1 billion, in cash and stock. But Dublin-based Perrigo once again rejected the takeover offer. Following Friday's shareholder approval, Mylan said it plans on launching a formal offer for Perrigo in the coming weeks.
