NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A fire on an oil platform off Louisiana's coast is still burning. Production on the platform was shut down. Authorities' latest estimate is that the storage tanks on the rig may hold as much as 5,400 gallons of oil — far below their capacity of 168,000 gallons. The Coast Guard said a containment boom and skimmers were on the way to the area in case they are needed.

Farmers in drought-stricken California strike a deal to cut water use; 'unprecedented action'

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California regulators Friday accepted a historic offer from a group of farmers holding some of the state's strongest water rights to voluntarily reduce their water use by one-quarter to stave off deeper, mandatory cutbacks amid one of the worst droughts on record. "We're in a drought unprecedented in our time. That's calling upon us to take unprecedented action," Felicia Marcus, chairwoman of the state Water Resources Control Board, said in announcing the agreement.

Oregon medical pot patient, burned in blast making hash oil, sues butane distributors for $11M

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon medical marijuana patient who was badly burned in an explosion while he was legally using butane as a solvent to make hash oil is suing the makers and sellers of the fuel. Treating marijuana with butane as a solvent extracts the potent hash oil at a low cost, but butane vapor is volatile. Explosions have become more common with the spread of legal medical and recreational marijuana.

Coverage for police with mental health issues clears Connecticut Senate but faces challenges

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A long-running effort to extend workers' compensation benefits to police officers who receive mental health injuries on the job cleared a key hurdle Friday after years of defeat in the General Assembly. Under the bill, such cancers are presumed to have developed while in the line of duty, after a firefighter inhaled or absorbed noxious fumes or poisonous gases.
